چکیده

Abstract A novel method for measuring the interfacial liquid film thickness between immiscible liquids of a slug/droplet in a micropipe is proposed. This method is capable of measuring an oil slug/droplet in water with the relative refractive index (m) between the immiscible liquids very close to one in a capillary tube. Unlike the measurement configuration for an air slug in water, an optical oriental for optimizing the refracted fringes pattern by the liquid–liquid interface is introduced. Measurements of film thicknesses of a kerosene oil droplet/slug in a water wetted capillary tube (m > 1) and a water droplet/slug in a kerosene oil wetted capillary tube (m < 1) were demonstrated. This diagnostic method is easy to implement and it will have great potential for immiscible liquid flow research in microfluidic channels.

Characterization of Liquid Film Thickness in Slug-Regime Microchannel Flows

An experimental investigation is conducted to examine the effects of operating conditions and channel size on the liquid film thickness of vapor bubbles in adiabatic air-water flows within the slug flow regime. Acrylic test sections are fabricated to contain a single microchannel of square cross-section with hydraulic diameters of 510 μm and 1020 μm. High-speed visualizations are used to map th...

2D Fringe Probing of Liquid Film Dynamics of a Plug Bubble in a Micropipe

Research on bubble dynamics and heat transfer in micropipe two-phase flows is an important area in micro electronic cooling, microfluidics and non-invasive laser/ultrasound microsurgery. For example, a pulsating heat pipe (PHP) is a very effective heat transfer device which made of a relatively long and thin sealed pipe containing both phases of the working fluid. The inner diameter of the pipe...

Numerical study of three-dimensional droplet impact on a flowing liquid film in annular two-phase flow

Annular flow with liquid entrainment occurs in a wide variety of two-phase flow system. A novel control volume finite element method with adaptive unstructured meshes is employed here to study threedimensional droplet deposition process in annular two-phase flow. The numerical framework consists of a ‘volume of fluid’ type method for the interface capturing and a force-balanced continuum surfac...

Interfacial organic synthesis in a simple droplet-based microfluidic system.

A spherical liquid-liquid interface can be obtained by dispersing one liquid phase into another to form droplets, which will facilitate the two-phase reactions between the immiscible participating fluids. The phase transfer catalysts assembled at the droplet "wall" catalyze the reactions between the aqueous and organic phases. The study illustrates an interfacial synthetic approach which is ide...

Modelling of stratified two phase flows using an interfacial area density model

Stratified two-phase flow regimes can occur in chemical plants, nuclear reactors and oil pipelines. A relevant problem is the development of wavy stratified flows which can lead to slug generation. The slug flow regime is characterized by an acceleration of the gaseous phase and by the transition of fast liquid slugs, which carry a significant amount of liquid with high kinetic energy. It is po...
